Vernon "Red" Charles Markle, of Colonial Beach died Monday, March 26, 2018, at Mary Washington Hospital of natural causes. Born in Crewe, VA, he lived the majority of his young life in Wickliffe, Ohio, until joining the Navy in 1953. He retired after 19+ years as a US Naval veteran, the majority of which was proudly served as a submariner. Near the end of his Navy career he met and married the love of his life and then settled to live in Hope Valley, RI. Red worked for the highway department in Hopkinton, Rhode Island until his retirement in 1995. He was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Jean M. Markle and three grandchildren, Brian Markle, Jr. and Charles Markle and Mike Smith. He is survived by nine children, Don Newsome, & wife Sharon, James Newsome, Emma Small, Ken Smith, & wife Betty, Kim Knight, Brian Markle, John Newsome, & wife Glenda, Troy Markle, and Victoria Markle; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren.
8 Bells ring, his watch is over, and all is well.
A memorial service will be held at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Colonial Beach, VA, on April 7th at 2 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Avenue, Fredericksburg, VA, 22401 or Oak Grove Baptist Church, 8096 Leedstown Road, Colonial Beach, VA, 22443.
