Robert Daniel "Bob" Purks, 76, of King George, passed away Sunday, August 5, 2018 at Mary Washington Hospital of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.
Mr. Purks was born March 9, 1942 in Fredericksburg to Warren S. Purks and Sarah Hope S. Purks. He graduated from King George High School in 1960 and enlisted with the National Guard. He was employed at Dahlgren for 10 years. In the meanwhile he graduated from Ferrier School in Martinsville, VA and shod horses for a number of years. Bob began breeding, training and showing quarter horses. He purchased three mares at an auction in Fort Smith Arkansas for less than $1000.00. Somehow, they got back to VA after having weathered a January snow storm. One of these mares, "Beuno Hopie," started his equine business and career at LaGrange Farm. Her bloodline put Bob and LaGrange Farm on the map, winning many AQHA championships. Her son, "Hopies Flower," became a great breeding stallion. Bob was a farmer/horseman, the present co-owner of Purks Quarter Horses in Dogue, VA and the former operator of LaGrange Farm in King George.

Bob married his high school sweetheart Judy Newton Purks on October 26, 2013. They are members of Round Hill Baptist Church. Bob enjoyed horses, playing poker, Bluegrass music and Fox News. He was a founding member of the Virginia Quarter Horse Association and a member of the American Quarter Horse Association. If anyone ever thought of Robert Purks and wasn't thinking of a horse, they didn't know him. The horse industry has lost a knowledgeable legend.

He is survived by his wife; Judy Newton Purks, children; David Purks and Sarah Jean Sandy both of King George, step-daughter; Leslie Robinson of Springfield, VA; mother, Hope Purks; sister Ethel (Wayne) Burton of King George; two great aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins; his beloved adopted daughters, Debbie Meadows and Andrea Erickson; pets, Muffin, Abby and Emmett. He was preceded in death by his father; Warren Purks, uncles; Stuart and Jerry and aunt; Audrey Lewis.

A funeral service will be held Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Storke Funeral Home, Nash & Slaw Chapel, 11089 James Madison Pkwy., King George, VA, where a visitation will be held Wednesday evening August 8, 2018 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to: AQHA Equine Research Program, 2601 East Interstate 40, Amarillo, TX 79104 and/or Mary Washington Hospice, 2300 Fall Hill Ave., #401, Fredericksburg, VA 22401. Condolences may be left for the family at www.storkefuneralhome.com.
