Patricia Newton Edwards

Patricia "Patsy" Newton Edwards of King George died January 6 in Vibra Hospital of Richmond. She was born in King George County on April 12, 1935, to Wallace and Dorothy Clift Newton and grew up in the Weedonville area. She was a 1953 graduate of King George High School.

Patsy retired in 2016 after 46 years with the Department of Social Services in King George, making her the longest-working employee in the county then. Not content to leave her service to the county behind, she returned to work a couple of days a week until this past May. She was renowned for maximizing reimbursements to the county from the state. She comforted foster children waiting to be placed in temporary homes and held babies as adoption papers were signed. She never wavered in her care or commitment to the people in need. At home, she managed her Edwards family Poplar Spring Farm in Nanzatico.

Patsy's spiritual life began at Potomac Baptist Church. She moved her membership to Shiloh Baptist when she married her husband of 52 years, W. Edgar Edwards, in 1954. They both served God faithfully. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution and a member of the King George Historical Society.

Patsy is survived by sons, Jeffery and his wife, Rhonda, of Richmond; Ted and his wife, Lisa, of Clinton, Mississippi; granddaughters, Meredith Collins and her husband, McLean, of Nashville, Tennessee, and Spenser Anne Edwards of Richmond; grandsons, Brooks Edwards of Nashville, and Sam Edwards of Rhododendron, Oregon; great-grandson, Lamar Collins, of Nashville; sister, Jean Newton of King George; sisters in law, Olive King of King George, Nancy Edwards of Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Eula Mae Tate of Colonial Beach; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Above all else, Patsy was devoted to her family, both close and extended. She will be missed dearly as a mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt.

The family expresses heartfelt appreciation to Doris Jones (niece) and her husband Calvin for the care and attention they gave Patsy and to Phyllis Jett for the daily care and love she gave Patsy over the last several months.

Patsy was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and brother, Mickey Newton.

Visitation will be Thursday night from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Storke Funeral Home and Friday, January 12, at 11 a.m. at Shiloh Baptist Church with the funeral service to follow at noon. Pastor Randy Allensworth will officiate. Burial will be in Shiloh Baptist Church cemetery. Following the graveside service, guests are invited to a reception in the family life center.

In lieu of flowers, contributions to Patsy's memory may be made to the Shiloh Baptist Church Building Fund, 13457 Kings Highway, King George, VA 22485.
