Maynard G. Penney, 85 of Bowling Green passed away Sunday, April 22, 2018 at Memorial Regional Medical Center.

Born in the Upper Zion area of Caroline County (now a part of Ft. A.P. Hill), Maynard was a lifelong farmer and realtor. He operated Penney Realty in Bowling Green for over 25 years. He was a longtime member of Salem Baptist Church, serving as Deacon and Sunday School teacher for many years. Extremely active in his community, he served as the first Fire Chief of Sparta Vol. Fire Department and was a charter member and first President of the Sparta Ruritan Club. Maynard was also a former member of the Board of Directors of Colonial Farm Credit and past President of the Virginia Crop Improvement Association and the Caroline Farm Bureau.

He is survived by his wife, Jean Penney; his children, Don Penney (Brenda), Sandy Boppe (Jeff) and Wendy King; four grandchildren Jesse and Matt King and Stephen and Kelly Boppe. His parents, Chandos and Ethel Penney and his brother, Norman Penney, preceded him in death.

A funeral service will be held Wednesday, April 25th at 11:00 am in Salem Baptist Church, Sparta, with a reception at the church immediately following. The family will receive friends at the church, one hour prior to the funeral. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 pm in Greenlawn Cemetery, Bowling Green. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Salem Baptist Church or Bowling Green Fire and Rescue. Online condolences may be made to
