Mary Ella Sanford, 82, of Colonial Beach, VA, passed away peacefully on June 4, 2017 at 8:55 p.m. at Mary Washington Hospital, surrounded by family. Mrs. Sanford was born June 12, 1934 in Westmoreland, VA to parents Rufus and Lue Ella Oliff, and had 10 brothers and sisters.

Mary had a strong altruistic nature and never hesitated to help people and organizations throughout her life. She lived a full and happy life and her hobbies included being a proud life member of the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Dept. Ladies Auxiliary, the Lions Club, and Colonial Beach Baptist Church. She loved sewing, cooking and baking, working at the church food bank, and was a caretaker to her large family.

Mrs. Sanford is preceded in death by her husband, Melvin G. Sanford, of 46 years. She is survived by her children and their spouses, Elaine Cox, Janie (George) French, Debbie (Mike) Pauley, Bill (Allison) Sanford, Doug (Julie) Sanford and Chris Sanford. She also had 14 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.

A viewing will be held June 7th from 6-8pm, at Storke Funeral Home , 131 3rd St., Colonial Beach, VA. Funeral services will be held June 8th at 11 am, Colonial Beach Baptist Church, 10 Garfield Ave., Colonial Beach, VA. A graveside service will follow at St. Peter's Cemetery in Oak Grove, VA. The family would like to personally thank the Carriage Hill Nursing Home staff for taking such great care of Mary during her stay. In lieu of flowers, donations will be accepted to the Colonial Beach Baptist Church food bank or the Colonial Beach Volunteer Fire Department.
