Joyce Constance Gladding Thomas went to be with the Lord on Friday, June 29, 2018. Joyce was born in Caret in Essex County, Virginia on March 20, 1930 to Harry Tilden Gladding and Else Louisa Schmidt Gladding. She was a graduate of St. Margaret's school in Tappahannock. She earned a biology and physical education degree from West Hampton College, the women's college of the University of Richmond, where she played field hockey and basketball. Joyce was on the U.S. National Field Hockey Team in the late 1940s. She taught biology, English, and physical education at Caroline High School in the 1950s and 1960s. She provided a kindergarten program for the children of Caroline County in the early 1970s. She helped to establish the first Caroline Junior Women's Club and was their first president. She was an avid tennis player and even offered lessons at the Caroline Community Club. Joyce enjoyed gardening, friends and family, and was an active member of St. Mary's of the Annunciation Catholic Church in Ruther Glen, Virginia. She will be truly missed by all those who knew and loved her. She is survived by her husband Julian A. Thomas, her four children, Elizabeth Townsend (Paul), Michael Thomas, Amy Thomas, and Cyr Thomas (Lori), her six grandchildren Jesse Thomas (Samantha), Lara Jaeger (Shawn), Kelly Viets, Tripp Musolino, Chandler Thomas, and Kaylin Thomas, her four great-grandchildren, Aleya McCurry, EJ Thomas, Lily Jaeger, and Finn Jaeger, her brother Harry T. Gladding (Dorothy), and her sister-in-law Button Thompson (Topper). She was preceded in death by her grandson, Robert Wayne Thomas. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Catholic Church on Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at 4 PM. The Thomas family will receive friends form 3-4 PM at the church.
