Eleanor J. Fortney, age 90, was escorted gently from this life by her Savior Jesus Christ on the evening of May 13, 2017. She was born in Whitmer, WV on April 16, 1927 to Stelman and Caroline Judy. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hunter; her sister, Rosalie; and brothers, Bill and Wade. Eleanor grew up in Romney, WV in a loving family. She was always an excellent student, earning academic honors including Knight of the Golden Horseshoe and being named valedictorian of her graduating high school class. She attended and graduated summa cum laude from Fairmont State College. While in college, she met her husband of 65 years, Hunter E. Fortney. They lived in Alexandria, VA for 49 years before moving closer to their daughters. Teaching, Eleanor's lifelong career, was a true calling for her. She brought her teaching gifts to students and they rewarded her by learning with enthusiasm. Eleanor was a woman of faith and service. She was a good listener and counselor to her friends. She was an elder in The Old Presbyterian Meeting House, Alexandria, Virginia. She was a Stephen's Ministry participant and delivered food for Meals on Wheels. She also belonged to several teaching sororities and served in the roles of president and secretary for these organizations. While teaching full time and raising her family, Eleanor earned her M.A in Education from American University in Washington, D. C. Eleanor is survived by her daughters Judy (Lou Valente) Fortineux and Diane (Scott) Richards as well as five grandchildren, Christopher and Jeremy Byrum, Emily Saggese, Philip and Kyle Richards and seven great grandchildren.
